WOW, CLIFF LEE A PHILLY!

Okay, this is one of those times when I have to veer away from the Cubs for a moment and focus on something else.  With the announcement that Cliff Lee has signed with the Phillies I immediately thought about their pitching rotation.  Their top 3 is comparable to the Braves big 3 of Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine.  Throw in Cole Hamels and this may be the best pitching staff assembled on one team in my lifetime.  I know that’s a huge statement to make, but it is possible…..at least for one season.

Anyway, I didn’t see this move coming.  I was hoping Lee would sign with the Rangers for 2 reasons.  1) I didn’t want the Cubs to have to face him 2) After leading the Rangers in the postseason I thought he was a great fit there.

Oh well, it will be fun to watch the Phillies this year, but I still think my Cubbies are a couple moves away from competing in the National League.  Yep, the optimism continues to grow!!!!!

TO DO LIST/WISH LIST UPDATE AND OTHER STUFF

Okay, it’s only been a handful of days since the winter meetings concluded.  I was hoping that the Cubs would have made some progress by now on signing Brandon Webb, trading for Chris Davis and/or Matt Garza and shopping Kosuke Fukudome and Tom Gorzelanny.  Unfortunately, I haven’t heard anything yet.  It seems like the Cliff Lee deal has all other teams on hold for the most part.  I’m sick of hearing about Cliff Lee.  Everytime I turn on the MLB Network all I hear about is Cliff Lee and will he go to the Yankees or Rangers, or is there a mystery team, or who offered 7 years or……..you get the idea.  I’m hoping he makes up his mind soon.  I think once he does sign with a team that everything else will start falling like dominoes.  At least that’s what I’m hoping.

Anyway, at the beginning of this offseason I created a “TO DO LIST/WISH LIST”.  Here’s my own personal update with a few minor changes.

1.  Find a job for Ryne Sandberg.  AAA Manager, Bench Coach, ANYTHING!!!!  Just keep Ryno! Well, it appears Ryno will not be with the Cubs organization at all this season.  THANKS JIM HENDRY AND TOM RICKETTS FOR RUNNING OFF A GREAT MAN! YEP, RYNO’S NOW THE PHILLIES TRIPLE A MANAGER

2.  Sign, Trade or put Tyler Colvin at First Base.  We signed Carlos Pena.

3.  If Colvin doesn’t move to First then we need to trade Kosuke Fukudome.  I still want to see Fukudome traded even though his value is probably low due to his high salary, but this is the final year of his deal.  I just want Colvin to get to play everyday.

4.  Starting rotation.  Sign Brandon Webb and trade for Matt Garza.  Make sure we keep Hak-Ju Lee if we do trade for Garza though.

5.  Try to sign Cliff Lee.  Okay, I know this won’t happen, but I can dream a little bit.  I would rather have Garza though.  He’s younger and I am tired of all the drama this offseason about Lee and where he’ll end up.  We could try to trade for Greinke too, but that’s not happening either.

6.  Trade Alfonso Soriano and his ridiculous contract.  I really doubt this one even comes close to happening, so it’s more of a wish than anything.  The only other bad contract out there I think we could even trade Soriano for is Barry Zito.  I think we just live with Sori’s poor defense and hope he stays healthy and hits 30+ homers this year.

7.  Sign Kerry Wood to help the bullpen.  Probably could get him for a fair price. I still think this may actually have a chance at happening.  Unless he wants to reunite with Larry Rothschild in New York.

8.  Hire a pitching coach.  We hired Mark Riggins.  It’s not what I wanted, but the type of move I expected from Hendry, Quade and Ricketts.

9.  What to do with Jeff Samardzija.  He’s out of minor league options.  I can see Samardzija being included in a trade if the Cubs don’t have any future plans for him.  Personally, I say we make some moves and let Samardzija and Casey Coleman compete for the 5th spot in the rotation.

Okay, there’s my list…..updated again.  Not many changes.  Here’s hoping things start happening this week.  I am starting to get that optimistic feeling back!

CUBS TO DO LIST/WISH LIST UPDATE

(I’ve read that Cubs may take a shot at Adam Dunn)  Cubs may be interested in Nick Johnson too.  We could always resign Xavier Nady too.  Who knows, maybe Bryan LaHair will win the job in the spring.

3.  If Colvin doesn’t move to First then we need to trade Kosuke Fukudome.

4.  Figure out the Starting rotation.  I say the only job safe is Ryan Dempster.

5.  Try to sign Cliff Lee.  Nothing wrong with going after a REAL #1 starter.  A big WISH! Or we could offer a deal to Brandon Webb.  Just a thought.

6.  Trade Alfonso Soriano and his ridiculous contract.  I really doubt this one even comes close to happening, so it’s more of a wish than anything.

7.  Sign Kerry Wood to help the bullpen.  Probably could get him for a fair price. I think this may actually have a chance at happening.

8.  Hire a pitching coach.  My wish would be to hire Greg Maddux, but that’s not happening.  Probably someone from within the organization from what I’ve read.  One other thought, is we could get the Yankees bullpen coach and former Cub Mike Harkey.

9.  What to do with Jeff Samardzija.  He’s out of minor league options.

I WISHTHE CUBS WOULD TRADE FOR ADRIAN GONZALEZ

Adrian Gonzalez.jpgAnother option the Cubs could pursue at first base is Adrian Gonzalez.
He will become a free agent in 2012 and it’s a strong possibility that
the San Diego Padres will trade their slugger.  The Cubs have a lot of
prospects that they could offer in exchange for the 28 year old
Gonzalez.  I’m sure it would take a combination of hitting and pitching
to get a deal done with the Pads, but I think Gonzalez would be a great
addition to the Cubs.  I would only make this dream of a deal if the
Cubs were able to sign Gonzalez to a long term contract.  I am sure he’s
going to get over twenty million a year as a free agent.  I think
Gonzalez would help solidify the Cubs need for a left handed power
hitter
.  He would bat in the middle of the lineup for certain.  I don’t see the Pads dealing him until the trade deadline next summer unless a deal was offered this offseason that they could not pass up.

Here’s a closer look at his stats.  He’s a career .284 hitter.  Over
the last five seasons, he’s hit between 24 to 40 homeruns.  That’s at
Petco so, I am confident he could hit more at Wrigley Field.  He’s
driven in over 100 runs three of the last four years.  In a better
lineup,  I believe he would be closer to 120 RBIs a year.  He’s also won
a gold glove at first base in 2008 and 2009.
He meets all the requirements of a stud player that the Cubs could go
after this offseason.  The only other stud player I would like the Cubs
to get is Cliff Lee.  It’s time we get serious about winning.

MY 2010 OFF-SEASON TO DO LIST/WISH LIST FOR THE CUBS
